synopsis
the film/play revolves around my mother Helen Geller sitting by her sewing machine looking out the window of her 14 floor apartment
overlooking Brighton Beach area at the ships coming into the ny harbor – and reminiscing about her life and coming to America and NYC
on one of those ships and how she like many immigrants, especially women survived by making clothes for themselves, their families,
starting cottage industries and like my mother working making samples for Oscar de la Renta, Ralph Lauren and others
aside from looking and reminiscing about her life surrounded by her photos and memorabilia and clothes and arts and dolls she made – the story also revolves around her interaction on the phone and mostly on the radio as she looks for her favorite yiddish station to sing along but keeps on bumping into a white racist anti-immigrant station that is next to the yiddish station that comes in and out at times while she is singing along and her irate interaction interactions where she says “if you want to know about America ask an Immigrant”
